Stock Ticker
Stock ticker is the machine which uses the paper tape to print out in a rolling order the stock prices for
display. It was invented in 1867 by Edward Calahan from American Telegraph Company. The machine was used to send
the stock prices and quotes at far off places through telegraph wiring. The stock details, that is the prices and
the changes thereof could be continuously conveyed as the machine worked nonstop. This helped in making stock
trading easier and time based matter.
In 1869 Thomas Alva Edison developed the Universal stock ticker which could send the information more quickly
than the older version and this helped to make the stock business more time sensitive. In the modern world the work
of the stock ticker is done by the computer printer through computer networking. Ticker displays still exist as
part of display on television news channels and on some web pages which are distributed world wide.
The stock ticker information is based on symbols specially developed to identify company names. Shares traded
mean the total volume of quoted shares sold in the market. The price per share of a particular trade is known as
Price Traded. The visual information given about the changes in the trading graph of the shares in the market that
is whether the sale of that particular share is higher or lower than the previous day’s closing is known as Change
Direction.
The change in the price of the share from the previous day’s closing is known as Change Amount. Nowadays these
changes are marked by using different colors like, if the price is higher than the previous day it is marked with
green, price fall is marked by red and if there is no change in the price from the previous day’s closing it is
marked with blue or white. This way through the stock ticker a trader can see at a glance the position of the
shares in the market and take instant decision about where to invest and how much to invest.
Stock ticker has made trading in shares faster, easier and transparent as the person has all the required
information on his fingertips at the touch of a button.
